January 17, 2022

Good afternoon-

I hope you are all enjoyed a lovely long weekend. I am grateful to look at this painting and quote in our front lobby every day as a reminder of why we were not in school today.

I hope you also had a chance to reflect on why we celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. today. At AHS we continue to focus on the work that still needs to be done for racial equality. This has become a day of service for many around the country. I encourage all students to find an opportunity this week to give back to the community, even if it's in a small way, in honor of Dr. King.

Students are also encouraged to join in events sponsored regularly by the CARES team to increase discussion and encourage action around issues of equality. There is a movie discussion this Wednesday evening. Interested students can email Ms. Nemeth for information.

The Cultural Student Union is also an opportunity for students to come together to support each other in discussion and action. This affinity group for students of color is a place for students to address discrimination within the Ashland community in an educational and constructive manner. Interested students should reach out to Mr. Thomas for information.

We recognize many students are feeling nervous about the upcoming exams. Some stress and anxiety is helpful. If you feel your student is experiencing a higher than normal level of stress or anxiety, I encourage you to reach out to your student's counselor for support.

Mr. McGann and Ms. Shiels, freshmen class advisors, are offering an x-block session this week "Tips and strategies to navigate exams and reducing the anxiety surrounding them".  The sessions will be small and focused. Encouraged your 9th grade student to sign up!

The gym will be open every morning from 7:30-8:30am for students to get some exercise/stress relief.

I know I have expressed more information regarding grading, etc. would be shared at the end of last week. Departments worked through thoughts and details on Friday. I will share the changes and expectations tomorrow, January 19.

A note for students:

Have you always wanted to play an instrument?  Have you been meaning to get more involved in school?  Have you played piano for years and now want to be part of an ensemble? Join the Choirchime Ensemble!

This is an incredible space where new and experienced musicians can collaborate together on a new instrument to make BEAUTIFUL music!  Never read a note in your life?  You’ll learn!  And quickly! This will be a fun, social, and uplifting group to be a part of.  Don’t miss out!
The first rehearsal will be Wednesday February 2nd at 3pm in the AHS Choir Room.  Students, faculty, and administration are welcome.  See Mrs. Nemeth for more information and to sign up!
