Week in Review 9/21-9/25

This week we congratulated six students; John Almeida, Tiffany Brouwers, Joe Geres, Roger Gu, Mary McLoughlin, and Madeline Robertson as Commended in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program.  We are so proud of their accomplishments.

Several students submitted resumes for our new partnership with the Ashland Business Association and Ashland High School.  We are so excited for this opportunity, proposed by an AHS alumni.  Students will be helping local businesses use social media to their advantage.  There are still opportunities to join so feel free to encourage any students with an interest in business or helping their community and a knack for social media to pick up information in the main office.

Student safety is always one of our top priorities.  Teachers have been reviewing lockdown procedures with classes this week and we expect to work in collaboration with the Ashland Police Deparment to have a practice drill next week.

The School Start Times Committee invites you to review the attached "Frequently Asked Questions" document and to sign up for the the School Start Time Committee Newsletter.  This can be accessed at: http://www.ashlandhs.org/ECSC/newsletter.html

The School Start Time Committee's LibGuide is available at:  http://ashlandhs.libguides.com/StartTimes.

Does your child need some help with that new math cumulative review? Do they have questions on the problems from last week's math quiz? Or do they just need a spot to do their math homework with someone who can lend a hand?

Free help sessions run by National Honors Society students are available every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in B243, Ms. Jost's room, from 2-3. No need for an appointment - just come on in and bring your homework, exam review, cumulative review or any other math problems. We can help!

Please check out the important flyers from many of the important community organizations in town under the Parent Flyers link!

Week of 9/15-9/18

Happy Friday!

Even though it was another short week things seem to be settling into a routine.

This is the time of year where we review safety protocols.  We had a fire drill this week and will practice lock-down procedures some time in the next two weeks.

Seniors are gearing up for thinking about next steps.  We had a College Mini-Fair on Wednesday and a College Information Night hosted by the Guidance Department on Thursday.  You can find the link for the Information Night on the Guidance website as well as information on our next Mini-Fair scheduled for September 30th.  Parents are welcome to attend!

I am looking forward to the Make-A-Wish fundraiser at tonight's volleyball game as well as cheering on the football team.  Best of luck to all of the other teams competing this afternoon as well!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Speaking of athletics...please see the note below from Mr. Grimes, Athletic Director

Dear Parents/Guardians-

The Athletic Department is looking for 3 parent volunteers to serve on a committee to review and rewrite the Student Athletic Handbook.  As part of the committee you will work with others from within the community to align the Athletic Handbook with the School Committee Policy Manual as well as the High School and Middle School Handbooks.

If you are interested please send me an email at mgrimes@ashland.k12.ma.us by Friday 9/25 at Noon.  If more than 3 parents are interested, I will hold a lottery.  Meeting times will be discussed once the committee is formed.

Thanks and I look forward to working with you all.

Mike Grimes

AHS Faculty and Community News

The deadline for submitting an application for the Social Media Internship is Thursday, September 24th. Please drop your cover letter and resume off to the front office on or before Thursday.  This is a great opportunity to gain some business experience while also sharing your knowledge with a local business needing help to create their social media profile.

Robotics
The Robotics Club will be holding its annual Used Legos sale at Ashland Day, this Saturday! Stop by our booth to see our demo bots, buy Legos, to meet our team members, and help us raise funds. Robotics club meets every Tuesday in room A219 from 2 until 3:25. All students are welcome to join. This year we are looking to enter two teams into the annual Botball competition. We are glad to have a growing number of female participants and hope to see more join this year's teams.

Yearbook
The yearbook officially goes on sale this week! Our book will once again (for the 7th straight year) be $85!!! Freshman, Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors will all be represented in sports, clubs, school activities and more! Last year we sold a record number of books as more than 1/3 of the student body purchased the 2014-15 yearbook. This year we hope to top that! Visit https://www.yearbookordercenter.com and enter our school number 13046 to place your orders.

All students are welcome to come be part of our team. We have over 120 pages to complete and it requires a dedicated staff. Play sports, or belong to other clubs? No worries! Students can join us for a meeting and we will figure out how we can work together on this amazing project.

Yearbook - Ashland Day $pecial for $eniors!!
This September only... order a yearbook, nameplate, and 1/2 page add and save 25%! That is almost the full price of a book. Pick up one of our fliers at our booth at Ashland Day, or emailcscott@ashland.k12.ma.us for details.

Week in Review

Week in Review

What a great week!  Today is always such a somber day but at AHS we were able to focus on the positive and we challenged students to find time to do a good deed for others.

Please be sure to check out the Parent Flyer's link for updated information on events around the schools, town and beyond!  Look for the link on the right hand sidebar of this blog.

Picture Day is Wednesday, September 16.  All students must have their picture taken for their school ID.  Any students wishing to order pictures should pick up an order form in the front office.

Ashland Ultimate will be raffling off a pair of tickets to see Ed Sheeran at Gillette Stadium on Friday, September 25th.  Raffle tickets are $1 each, 6 for $5, or 15 for $10.  Raffle tickets will be sold during all three lunches from Tuesday, September 15 through Tuesday, September 22.  The winner will be announced on Thursday, September 24.  Questions can be addressed to Mr. Moshkovitz.

Wednesday we met with each class to review building expectations and share important information.

Every class watched a video from Mike Smith titled "Judgement" as we kicked off the theme of "We All Matter".  Check him out at Mike Smith Live.  We will be using his Character Education series this year in 9th grade Wellness classes.

The freshmen learned how to log-in to their iStudent accounts.  (Please feel free to reach out me or Mrs. Chaney if anyone is having trouble doing this.)

The seniors filled out information cards for their caps and gowns....June 5th will be here far too quickly.  I have met with the class leadership and advisors over the past year and as a group made the decision that the Class of 2016 would all walk wearing one color.  When the students asked what color and heard "Ashland blue with white accents" there was a huge round of applause.  It was amazing and our rep from Josten's said she had never seen such a wonderful response.  I can tell the Class of 2016 is going to continue to be another very special graduating class.

Today was our school-wide Positive Behavior Supports activity as well as Convocation. As always it was a crazy, fun-filled, educational day.  Teams of 15 mixed grade students competed in a scavenger hunt that allowed them to learn about (or get a refresher) on our core values of Respect, Responsibility. Integrity, Involvement, and Achievement.  They had fun while learning a lot about the culture at AHS.

Convocation is always an exciting event where the ceremonial key is given to the seniors.  It was spirited as always.   After the ceremony, during which students acknowledged the importance of this day in history, the seniors to their annual fire truck picture and had a class barbecue.  Students were encouraged to take some time today or this weekend to complete community service or even just do a good deed for someone.

 Have a wonderful long weekend!

First Day of School!

Good afternoon-

What a great day it was today!  It was wonderful to feel the energy in the building and see students and teachers reconnecting and getting to know each other.

Students started the day in homeroom where they received an updated schedule as well as Health and Emergency Forms that should be making their way home to you.  Please help us out by asking your student for the paperwork and getting it back to the main office as soon as possible.

The traffic flow was pretty smooth this morning.  Please remember that parents drop off and pick up in back of the school.  Buses drop in the front of the school so please do not pull in between 7:00- 7:30am or 1:30-2:00pm.

Student drivers should pick up parking applications in the front office.  They are due back Friday, September 11 by the close of school.

Check out the important under Parent Flyers to the right!

Please don't hesitate to contact me or one of the Deans if you have any questions!

Lauren (Forger) Carreiro - Dean of the Classes of 2017 & 2019
Paul Massalski- Dean of the Classes of 2016 & 2018

Important Notes from our Guidance Department:

The last day to drop or add classes to student schedules without penalty is Friday, September 18Students seeking schedule changes must sign up for an appointment with their counselor immediately.  Courses dropped from classes after September 18 will be awarded a permanent grade of "WP" (withdrawn passing) or "WF" (withdrawn failing), depending on the grade at the point of withdrawal.  This will be recorded on transcripts and become part of the permanent record, and is to be avoided at all costs.  Students will not be allowed to enroll in new classes after September 18.

The PSAT will be given here at AHS on Wednesday, October 14 beginning at 7:30 am.  Students can register in the guidance office until Friday, October 2nd.  Cost for the test is $15, paid in cash or check made out to "Ashland Public Schools".  College bound juniors are encouraged to take the PSAT, and sophomores considering it are encouraged to consult with their counselor first.  In general, sophomores currently taking Algebra II are the best candidates to consider taking it.  Students and parents are encouraged to consult your guidance counselor with any questions about the PSAT.

AHS will sponsor two College Fairs on September 17 and September 30 from 9:45 - 10:45Over 75 colleges will visit the AHS cafeteria each day with information about their programs.  Juniors and seniors will be excused from class, and parents are encouraged to attend.  Lists of participating colleges will be available in the guidance office and posted on the guidance website after September 8th.

College Night for Seniors and Families will be held on Thursday, September 17th at 7:00 pm in the Ruthfield Auditorium at AHS.  All seniors and families considering college are strongly encouraged to attend.  This session will contain different information than the one last spring, and students and parents who attended then are also encouraged to attend this.  Please contact your counselor with any questions.

Students looking for part time work are encouraged to check out the "Jobs" bulletin board in the guidance office.  Several employers are now hiring.
